Martha Platt

1917 - 2014 SHEFFIELD Longtime Berkshire County resident, Martha Platt died on August 11, 2014 at Geer Village, Canaan, Conn. Martha was born in 1917 in St. Johns, Mich., and received her bachelor's degree in Art Education from Eastern Michigan University and her master's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She also studied at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Miami, and the Art School in Cambridge, England. She taught art in the public schools of Michigan and Illinois and at N.E. Missouri State University. During World War II, she worked as a technical illustrator for aircraft. She married the Rev. Donald Platt (deceased in 2006) in Santa Monica, Calif., on Sept. 4, 1944. Together they lived in Crystal Lake, Ill.; Cambridge (England); Coral Gables, Fla.; and Staten Island, N.Y. They moved from New York City to Sheffield, Mass., in 1968. Thirteen years later, they retired to Salisbury, Conn. In 1974, Martha co-founded the Sheffield Art League, which remains to this day, a vibrant force in the local arts community. She has exhibited her watercolors widely in the area and has received several awards for her art. Her work is found in private collections throughout this country and England. She summed up her art by saying that "her watercolors express the beauty and peace of the Berkshire hills and countryside." She is survived by her sister, Lois Pollock of Marietta, Ga; her two sons, Michael Platt of Great Barrington, and Donald Platt of West Lafayette, Ind.; her daughter-in-law, Dana Roeser of West Lafayette; her two granddaughters, Eleanor and Lucy Platt, also of West Lafayette; and by several nephews and nieces. A memorial service for Martha Platt will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal & Trinity Lutheran Church, 180 Main St., Sheffield, with the Reverend Anne E. Ryder Rector and Pastor officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Salvation Army and/or the American Red Cross.
