Nancy Ann "Nan" Julien Fleck
1937-2014 PITTSFIELD Nancy Ann "Nan" Julien Fleck of Orleans, Mass. died peacefully on Monday, March 31 at her home in Rock Harbor Village. Born on February 25, 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the youngest daughter of Harold 'Doc' Julien and Anne Sullivan Julien graduated from Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Ill., attended George Washington University in St. Louis and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University. An urge to travel led Nan to American Airlines' Flight Stewardess College, where she earned her wings in 1959. While based in Boston, she met and married Dr. Sigmund Fleck and moved to Pittsfield. Later, Nan lived in New Haven Conn., Orleans and South Natick Mass., before settling with her three children on the Julien Family farm in Carroll County, Ind. when she secured a librarian position at Purdue University. Nan returned to Boston to attend graduate school and was employed by the Harvard University library system when she suffered a stroke in her Cambridge home. Despite the challenges of severe aphasia, she continued to work, live independently and pursue her studies, earning a Master's degree in Library Science from Simmons College in 1989. Seeking warmer climes, she moved to Homestead, Fla., only to be uprooted by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Nan eventually returned to Boston, living briefly on Beacon Hill before moving back to Orleans, on her beloved Olde Cape Cod. A life-long love of books and writing led Nan to admire an eclectic mix of authors, poets and essayists - Henry Beston, e. e. cummings, Charles Kuralt, Barbara Pym, Edward Gorey - long after she lost her ability to read. She was an avid photographer, collected maps, and cherished memories of many unusual journeys, including a three week cross-country bus trip with her pre-teen children and an expedition to the Bailiwick of Jersey. She is survived by three children and six grandchildren: Anne Catherine McLaughlin of Lenox and her children, Addie and William; Edward Carroll Fleck and his wife, Eileen McCormack, of Boston, and their children Margaret and Peter, and Sigmund Joseph Fleck and his wife, Colleen of Malvern, Pa., and their children, Nolan and Kyle. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Julien; mother , Ann Julien; and sister Barbara Julien Twehues of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. and Ft. Thomas, Ky. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Nan J. Fleck to the Orleans Council on Aging, 150 Rock Harbor Rd, Orleans, MA 02653.
