Dr. Peter H. Leonard

Dr. Peter H. Leonard passed away on November 21, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Alice Leonard; two children, Cathy Belding of Columbus and Hap Leonard of San Francisco; grandchildren, Riley and Ethan Belding of Columbus and Brody and Ryder Leonard of San Francisco; and a sister, Pauline Leonard of Pittsfield, MA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry P. and Helen Psinakis Leonard; a brother, George Leonard; and a sister, Constance McGregor. Dr. Leonard was born in Pittsfield, MA. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a major in chemistry and a minor in physiology. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, with honors, from Indiana University School of Dentistry and practiced Orthodontics in Columbus Indiana from 1965 to 2002. Dr. Leonard was an active member of the following organizations: American Association of Orthodontists, Great Lakes Association of Orthodontics, American Dental Association (ADA), Indiana Association of Orthodontists, South Central Dental Society, Capitol City Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine Temple, Evening Kiwanis Club, Omicron Kappa Upsilon - Theta Theta Chapter - Indiana School of Dentistry, Order of AHEPA, and Foundation for Youth. He served as president for the following organizations: Bartholomew County Dental Society, Indiana Society of Orthodontists, Indiana University Orthodontic Alumni Association, Board of IUPUC, and Columbus North High School Building Corporation, which added the William Stearman Natatorium and Swimming Complex and the Judson Erne Auditorium to North High School in the early 1980s. He was a member of the board of directors of Great Lakes Society of Orthodontists, a charter member of the Pursuit of Excellence Program at Indiana University School of Dentistry, was appointed to the Dean's Advisory Council by Dean William Gilmore, and was a former faculty member of the Department of Orthodontics. He was on the board of directors of Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce where he was involved with the establishment of Leadership Bartholomew County with IUPUC and The Heritage Fund. He was also on the board of directors of Columbus Regional Hospital Foundation, IUPU Columbus (where he also served as president), and Leadership Bartholomew County, and was on the advisory board of Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He received the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award 2000 with his wife, Alice, on April 25, 2002. He will be greatly missed.
