Ralph E. Blakesley
1931 - 2013 DALTON Ralph E. Blakesley, 82, of 634 Old Windsor Road, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born on April 12, 1931, in Springfield, he was the son of Lawrence and Ethel Dagenais Blakesley. A longtime Dalton resident, he was educated in Colrain and Shelburne Falls schools.
He served his country in the Navy and then with the Army during the
. He was discharged from the Army on June 5, 1954, with the rank of Corporal.
Mr. Blakesley was employed for many years as a logger for O'Connell Lumber of Westfield. He also worked as a truck driver for many years for the Eastern States Farmers Exchange and for the Sformer Berkshire Express. He had also served the Town of Dalton for 17 years as the Dalton Animal Control Officer. He retired in 1991.
He was a member of the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department for many years. His longtime hobby and passion was his Haflinger Blue Ribbon horse team which he worked with providing sleigh rides, hayrides and wedding ceremony rides for the bride and groom. He enjoyed vacationing in the Amish country and hunting. He was also a member of the Carriage Club of Lenox.
He leaves his wife, the former Joan Heath of Dalton, whom he married July 18, 1952, at Sacred Heart Church; a son, Ricky E. Blakesley and his wife, Corina, of Washington, Mass.; two daughters, Sheila J. Blakesley of Dalton and Diane J. Dondi and her husband, John, of Astatula, Fla.; his sister; Lorraine Bishop of Suffield, Conn.; three grandchildren, Melissa Keith of Dalton, and Jennifer Letourneau and Jonathan Blakesley, both of Pittsfield, and four great-grandchildren, Jace Keith, Trevor Sawyer, Shaun Letourneau and Alize Blakesley.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Blakesley who died July 3, 1966.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Ralph E. Blakesley of Dalton, who died April 20, 2013, will Friday at 11 a.m. at the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, conducted by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor of St. Agnes Church. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dery-Foley Funeral Home.
Donations in memory of Ralph may be made to the Friends of Renal Dialysis or to the Dalton Volunteer Ambulance both in care of the funeral home, 890 Main Street, Dalton, MA 01226
