JOHN EVANS Obituary

EVANS, JOHN LEONARD EVANS, JOHN LEONARD, age 89 of Dora, AL. The Southern Gentleman went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 5, 2013, after a brief illness. He was born in Birmingham, AL. on February 24, 1924. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Sumiton Senior Citizen's Group where he enjoyed the closeness and fellowship of the fellow members. Mr. Evans was a loving son, husband, brother, and special uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine, whom he was married to almost 60 years, a brother - Thomas Vernon Evans, three sisters - Ruth Smith, Annie Belle Glenn, and Lottie Dove. On March 16, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army, served in the 567th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company, saw action in WWII European Theater (Battles: Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe) before his honorable discharge from active duty on December 16, 1945. The medals he received were the WWII Victory Medal, American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. After the war, Mr. Evans had a long career as a painter and especially a professional wall paper hanger, which kept him in high demand. He is survived by his caregiver and nephew, Lee (Nancy) Doss, sister Christine Russell, special niece Betty Wells, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who held a special place in his heart. Visitation will be 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Elmwood Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Elmwood Chapel with Rev. John Foles and Rev. Billy Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews. The family would like to send out a special thanks to the medical staff and nurses of the Safe Harbor section of VA Medical Center for their care, treatment, honor, and respect they gave to our loved one.
