Part of a large and loving family, Barbara was a mother, professor, sister, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, mentor and friend. She received a BA from Radcliffe College in 1944, after which she completed a PhD at Clark University with research at the Radcliffe Institute. Barbara joined the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University in 1971 where she served for the duration of her career, acting as chair from 1984 – 1989. After retiring in 1993, she continued to contribute to the department and field. An avid walker, biker, swimmer, and tennis player she also loved to travel with family and friends. Barbara's last 7 years were spent at Rogerson House. She is greatly missed.
