1941 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
ELIZABETH LEE "BETSY" SCHULZ Obituary
Schulz, Elizabeth Lee "Betsy" Passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at Sherrill House in Jamaica Plain. Betsy was born September 21, 1941, in Chicago to Jane Lawrence Schulz and Otto Schulz and grew up in nearby Evanston with two sisters and three brothers. Education was very highly stressed. After high school, in 1959, she entered Radcliffe College. She graduated in 1963 in the first class receiving diplomas from Harvard University. She taught for ten years, including at the School of the Church of the Advent on Beacon Hill and a Marblehead public school. In the 70's Betsy switched careers, spending a year at Simmons College, studying library science, and began a career of over 30 years at the Boston Public Library, as a children's librarian, in branches such as Mattapan, Roxbury, & Brighton. "Away from the job," Betsy had many interests. She was a member of Christ Church Cambridge since 1959, where she sang in the choir and was active in many of the church's ministries. She read fiction and non-fiction, took great interest in current events, locally, nationally, and internationally. She loved to travel. Between Betsy's work as a children's librarian with BPL and her devotion to the children of her family and friends, her life touched literally thousands of children. Her devotion to her friends was legendary, often taking a friend on a trip to somewhere nearby or on another continent. Betsy's genuine interest in people, her wit and sense of humor, and her generosity made her treasured by a wide and very diverse group. Betsy's family is so thankful for the loving care she received from so many for so long, the health care professionals at Harvard Vanguard Health Care, Mt. Auburn Hospital, and most recently the staff at Sherrill House. Her care givers, and dear friends, Ana Calixte and Jemil Newsom, meant so much to her these past many, many months, and most of all, her friends of many, many years, Janey Todd and Peter Barkley, and her cousin, George Schulz. Betsy is survived by her loving siblings: sisters, Barbara (John) Larson of Santa Barbara, Calif., Dorothy (Ralph) Hitchcock of Nevada City, Calif., and sister-in-law, Ranji, of Jacksonville, Florida, her brothers, Jim (Philbin) of Victor, Idaho, and David (Noreen) of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, as well as 9 nieces and nephews, and 13 grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother, Peter, and her nephew, Kevin. A memorial service is being planned at Christ Church in Cambridge and will be announced on the funeral home website. Condolences may be sent to the funeral home or online at: www.brownandhickey.com.
