1926 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Baden, Dr. George Age 88, of Swampscott, entered into rest on Friday, May 2, 2014. He was the beloved husband of the late Eva (Cohen) Baden. Born in Chelsea, he was the son of the late Max and Helen (Carvin) Baden. He attended Shurtleff and Chelsea High Schools and was a graduate of Suffolk University (BS and MS), Mass College of Optometry (BS and OD) and Salem State (MS). He enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II. He served in the Company C 19th Armored Infantry Battalion from June 2, 1944 until being honorably discharged on October 17, 1945. He served with distinction in the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns. He was wounded in battle on his 19th birthday and earned a Purple Heart. He also received a Bronze Star and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with two stars. He was most proud of his Combat Infantry Badge which signified his fighting in action during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was a middle school teacher in the Boston Public School System at the Joseph H. Barnes School in East Boston from 1957 to 1986. He was also a Doctor of Optometry from 1951 to 1986. George enjoyed playing the piano, writing music and attending many musical performances of Jazz and Big Band music. He wrote a musical called the Piano Bar with Eva Baden, which was performed at various North Shore venues in Marblehead and Lynn. George was an active member of the Veterans group in Melrose. He was also an avid Boston Sports fan. He lived his life to help others in service to his country and community. He leaves his children, Irene Baden Harwarth and her husband Timothy of Fairfax, VA, Mindy Baden Standley and her husband Peter of Woburn and Jerald Baden and his wife Nancy of Medfield. He was the cherished Grandfather to Jessica Weaver, Laura Standley, Cathy Harwarth and Kyle Baden. Services at Temple Shalom Emeth, 14-16 Lexington St. BURLINGTON on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 10:30AM. Interment following will be private. Memorial Observance at the home of Mindy and Peter Standley on Wednesday from 6-9PM and Thursday from 2-7PM. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be sent to the D.A.V.
