1919 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
LeROY, George H. M. 94, of Taunton died April 9, 2014 at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing Center. He was born on August 23, 1919 in Livingston Manor, NY to Ethel (Hasneder) and George M. LeRoy. The family moved to Newburgh, NY when he was 3 years old. In 1941 he was graduated from Lehigh University with a B. S. in Business Administration. In 1946 he earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Business. On June 20th, 1944 he married his beloved wife, Nancy Beers. During WW II he served as a 1st and 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army with the Office of Strategic Services, in the China Burma Theater. In 1948 he began his career as a jeweler at L. G. Beers Jewelers on Main Street in Taunton and later became owner of the store. He was a Registered Jeweler and Certified Gemologist and a past president of the New England Guild of the American Gem Society. He retired in 1986. He and his wife Nancy enjoyed 5 in-depth world tours with the Gemological Institute of America. He also had a career as a banker being President of the Bristol County Savings Bank from 1979 until 1981 and Chairman of the Board of Directors at BCSB from 1981 until 1993. At the age of 15 George became an Eagle Scout. His love of scouting led him to serve as a member of the finance committee for the Girl Scouts of Plymouth Bay Council and to be an advisory council member for the Boy Scouts of Annawon Council. Additional community service includes Vice President and Member of the Executive Committee for the United Way of Taunton, Chairman of the Budget Committee of the United Way for over 20 years, a Director of the Bristol County Health Association, a Corporator of Morton Hospital, and on the finance committee of the Pilgrim Congregational Church. He was Rotarian for over 60 years and was the President of the Taunton Rotary Club in 1962 and 1963, and was elected a Paul Harris Fellow. In addition to his wife Nancy of almost 70 years, he is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Williams and Joanne Le Roy, his two grandchildren Marcia Wells and Mark Williams and four great grandchildren, nephews, great nephews and a great niece. His brother Gaynor Le Roy, three nieces, a nephew, two great nephews all died earlier. Mr. Le Roy thoroughly enjoyed meeting the public for his 42 years in the jewelry store. He was most proud of his tenure with the Bristol County Savings Bank. He will be greatly missed by family, extended family, friends and colleagues. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Thursday, April 17, 2014 from 2-5 PM in the Crapo- Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., (Route 138 South) Taunton.
