JAMES M. FARRELL Obituary
FARRELL, James M. A Burlington attorney whose clear-eyed views, quick wit, and deep loyalty to friends and family were well known in and out of the courts, died of natural causes yesterday at his home in Colchester. He was 71. Known to all as Jim, James Farrell distinguished himself early as a young attorney whose diligence and mastery of the facts of a case were appreciated by judges statewide. His quick thinking in one trial resulted in a change in VT law on malpractice. James spoke often and warmly of his experience at New York University Law School, where his roommates were the late Elliott Wilk, famed NY State Supreme Court Justice & Ira Globerman, Bronx Supreme Court Justice. Jim credited these two native New Yorkers with enlightening him in ways he could not have experienced in Burlington. He was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1968, and was immediately hired by the practice of McNamara, Fitzpatrick & Sylvester. James quickly attracted clients, and was offered partnership within two years, so the firm became McNamara, Fitzpatrick, Sylvester, Farrell and Maley. James opened his own firm on College St. in the mid-1970s, again attracting good clients, and where he practiced for many years. James Marks Farrell was born on February 27, 1943 in Burlington, VT where he grew up. Farrell attended Cathedral Elementary School and Rice Memorial High School. Farrell received a BA degree in history from St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT in 1965 before leaving for NYU Law School. James leaves his sister, Elaine F. Cox (George A.) of Sarasota, FL; his brothers, Gary N. Farrell (Jane) of Naples FL and S. Burlington, Eric F. Farrell of Burlington, Brian D. Farrell (Irina) of Winchester, MA, and Mark A. Farrell (Jennifer) of Burlington. James also leaves 17 nieces and nephews, 13 grand-nieces and nephews and a great-grandniece. His parents, Anne and J. Nelson Farrell, predeceased him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel on the campus of St. Michaels College in Colchester, VT at 10:00 am on Friday, May 16, 2014. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7pm on Thursday, May 15, at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sara Holbrook Community Center, 66 North Ave., Burlington, VT 05401. To send online condolences to the family, please visit: www.readyfuneral.com.
