1933 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Rhinelander, John B. John Bassett Rhinelander, 1933-2014, former U.S. government official, lawyer, businessman, and arms control expert, unexpectedly passed away on March 2, 2014. He was 80. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanne Rhinelander, his four children, John Richard Rhinelander and his wife Amy, Margaret Rhinelander Rizzi and her husband Pat, Katherine Pierson Rhinelander and Thomas Bassett Rhinelander, and nine grandchildren, ages 9 through 20. He was the second of four children of Constance Templeton Rhinelander. Born in Boston in 1933, John was educated at the Dexter School and Groton School and graduated from Yale University in 1955 and the University of Virginia Law School in 1961, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. John spent one year as a clerk for Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan of the U. S. Supreme Court and worked for four years at the Davis Polk firm in New York. John moved to Virginia and served in a variety of positions in the federal government including Special Civilian Assistant to Paul Nitze the Secretary of the Navy, Legal Adviser to the U. S. Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), General Counsel of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) and Under Secretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. After leaving government, John was a Partner at the Washington, DC law firm of Shaw Pittman (now called Pillsbury) and taught courses on arms control at UVA Law School and Georgetown University. He was a long-term board member of the Arms Control Association and Lawyers Alliance for World Security, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. John spent his retirement years with his wife Jeanne enjoying their home on the water in Gloucester, MA, traveling and visiting his children and grandchildren while remaining engaged in issues of the day. Aside from his many accomplishments, John treasured his role as a devoted husband, father & grandfather.
