JOSEPH HINSEY IV Obituary
HINSEY, Joseph IV 82, of Lexington, MA, died Friday. He was born to the late Joseph C. and Sarah Callen Hinsey on October 17, 1931, in Palo Alto, CA. Joe was a graduate of Scarsdale High School (1949), Cornell University (1953), Cornell Law School (1956) and the Harvard Business School (1957). Joe married fellow Cornell student Phyllis LaRue in 1956 and lived in Scarsdale, NY, before relocating to Cambridge, MA, in 1987, when Joe joined the Harvard Business School senior faculty as the H. Douglas Weaver Professor of Business Law at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to joining the HBS senior faculty in 1987, Joe was a senior partner at the New York law firm of White & Case, where he specialized in corporate and securities law with a particular emphasis on corporate governance. His professional offices in the American Bar Association over the years included service as Chairman of the Business Law Section, Chairman of its Committee on Corporate Laws and Editor of The Business Lawyer. He was an elected member of the American Law Institute and served for many years as Consultant to its Corporate Governance Project. In addition, Joe was a founding member of the Legal Advisory Committee to the Board of Governors of the New York Stock Exchange. Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis LaRue Hinsey of Lexington, and three daughters: Carolyn Hinsey of Manhattan, NY; Nancy Hinsey Bakacs of Sudbury, MA; and Sara Hinsey Raveret and husband John Raveret of Wellesley, MA. Joe is also survived by six grandchildren: Elizabeth Bakacs, Emily Bakacs, Sara Bakacs, Callen Raveret, Lauren Raveret, and Graham Raveret. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joes name to the Primary Care Center at Mount Auburn Hospital, 330 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.
