Obituary Condolences

Neal, Judith L., always a loving presence to her family, friends, and colleagues, died on Saturday, December 21, at home in Arlington, her husband of 41 years, Robert W., at her side. She was 87 years old and had battled cancer for three years. Born in Chicago in 1926, Judy was the daughter of Dr. Esmond R. and Mrs. Marian B. Long, her father a prominent professor of pathology and an expert in tuberculosis. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College, Judy began a career that included working at Harvard University for more than 20 years, primarily in the University Marshal's Office, where she took the lead in organizing international visitor programs. In this role, she managed the activities of visiting dignitaries from all over the world. One of these eminent visitors was Prince Charles of Wales, who spoke at Harvard's 350th anniversary celebration in 1986. The prince, via his private secretary, sent a letter to university president Derek Bok after the festivities, singling out a few people by name, including Judy, for special, personal thanks. After retiring in 1991, Judy remained active with the university. She served as president of the Harvard University Retirees Association from 1997 to 2000 and as a member of its board of directors for a total of 14 years. She also edited the association's newsletter. With Harvard Neighbors, a community organization, Judy had the opportunity to blend her skills in editing and gourmet cooking as one of two editors of the Harvard Neighbors centennial cookbook, Cooks by the Yard, published in 1994. Her role as a recipe tester for the book was one that her family especially welcomed. Giving to her family and her community was the essence of who Judy was. She was well read, widely traveled, culturally astute, open minded, and always learning, the vibrant center of her family's life. Her dignity, competence, and intelligence made her a role model for both women and men. In addition to her beloved husband, Robert, Judy leaves her children, stepchildren, and their spouses: David Pincus, Catherine O'Brien, Tom O'Brien, Andrea Heinlein, Terry Heinlein, Robert H. Neal, and Deborah Neal; her grandchildren: Carolyn, Elizabeth, Mark, and Julia Pincus and their mother, Ann Bassi; Amy Gullings; Tommy O'Brien; Jonathan Heinlein; and Abram Neal; and her sister-in-law, Margaret Long, and the Long children, Steven, Robby, and Sandy. Judy was predeceased by her brother, Esmond R. Long, Jr., and two grandchildren: Christopher Heinlein and Jamie Neal. Memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5022 or to the .
