WEINTRAUB, Dr. Lewis R. Of Dedham and North Falmouth, formerly of Wayland, passed away on Sunday, August 18th at the age of 79. Lewis was a professor of medicine at Boston University and former Chief of Hematology at Boston Medical Center. Always putting others before himself, Lew will be remembered as a caring doctor, passionate teacher and beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Lew graduated from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School. Following medical school he continued his training at University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan and Mount Sinai hospitals. After his training, Lewis served in the U.S. Army as a Captain, Assistant Chief of Hematology at Walter Reed Hospital, where he also carried out research on iron metabolism. He returned to Boston in 1965, first on the faculty at Tufts Medical School and New England Medical Center. In 1972 he joined Boston University School of Medicine as an associate professor of medicine. From 1977 to 2003 he served as Hematology Section Chief and then Unit Chief. During his career, Lew pursued a broad range of clinical and translational research in hematology. He is the author of over 78 papers in hematology, although his passion was in his teaching responsibilities and caring for patients. When he could break away from the hospital, Lew loved to pursue his other passions sailing, fishing, skiing and tennis. Passions that he relished sharing with his sons. Lewis is survived by his wife Joan Seifer Weintraub; his son Daniel Weintraub and wife Jessica Weintraub; his son Jon Weintraub and wife Emily Weintraub and their daughter Maren Weintraub; and his brother, Alan Weintraub and his wife Betty and their children. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, September 15th at 2:30 pm at the Great Meadow Hall in the Community Center at NewBridge on the Charles, 5000 Great Meadow Rd, Dedham, MA. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to: Boston Medical Center, for benefit Lewis R.
