RICHARD DOBER Obituary
DOBER, Richard 85, died peacefully at his home in Cambridge on Jan. 21. Described by his peers as the dean of campus planning, Dober advised more than 450 colleges and universities, cultural and scientific institutions, and government agencies worldwide. He prepared campus plans for new and expanding universities on five continents and served as a member of UNESCOs Committee on Museum Architecture and Technology. He worked for many years with the Bush Foundation, advising Historically Black Colleges & Universities, and advised the family of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the design of the King Memorial in Atlanta. Other clients included The Art Institute of Chicago and the Massachusetts General Hospital, among many others. A founder of the Society for College and University Planning, Dober held appointments at Harvard, Iowa State, and MIT. His nine books are considered benchmark references. He edited dozens of books and wrote numerous articles and reviews. Raised in Philadelphia and Staten Island, he received his B.A. with Honors from Brooklyn College in 1953 and was awarded its Alumnus Award of Honor in 1992. He received his Master in City Planning from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and was awarded Harvards prestigious Frederick Sheldon Travelling Fellowship. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and U.S. Army. Dober lived in Cambridge and Nantucket and was an avid sailor, gardener, and skilled pinochle player. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eleanor Lee (Lyman) Dober; children Patrick of Newton and Claire Danaher of London, Ontario; five grandchildren; brother Lawrence; sisters, Theresa and Veronica; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Betty Edwards, and brothers, Gerald and Patrick. Funeral from the Lehman Reen & McNamara Funeral Home, 63 Chestnut Hill Ave. (nr. Brighton Courthouse) BRIGHTON Saturday Feb. 1st at 9 am. Funeral Mass in St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, 28 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill at 10 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting Hours Friday Jan. 31st from 3:30-5:30 and 6:30-8 PM. Interment private.
