He was the cherished grandfather of Colum, Ava, Owen, Madelyn and Ian Smith and Roger and Derek Waleffe. Throughout Richards's life he was an avid sailor, who was influenced by his dad who taught him how to sail on the Great Lakes. Dr. Smith, along with Dr. Richard Monsees and Dr. James Penza, went on to form one of the largest OB-GYN practices on the South Shore which is now known as South Shore Women's Health. The practice was one of the first to incorporate midwifery as an alternative concept in woman's healthcare. In 2006, Dr. Smith retired from practicing medicine, to enjoy his family and other interests and hobbies. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial service, celebrating his life at 11am on Saturday April 28, 2012 at the Old South Union Church in Weymouth. Burial will be private.
