Obituary Condolences

MANNING, Robert Emmett 87, of Hyannis, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2014 after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Jean (Gorman) Manning. Born and raised in South Boston of Irish immigrants, he was the youngest and last remaining child of Mary Conroy and Michael (Mannion) Manning from Rosmuc County Galway, Ireland. Bob, Shaper, was an all-scholastic quarterback of the undefeated South Boston High football team of 1944. He later became a loyal member of the South Boston Wildcats Football Club. He was inducted into the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. A World War II veteran Bob served in the South Pacific in the battle of Okinawa aboard the USS Yosemite. After the war he attended Newman Prep school and received a football scholarship to Arizona State. He graduated with a degree in English and later got a masters in Biology from Boston University. He started his teaching and coaching career at Provincetown High School in 1952 as a math teacher and head coach in football and baseball. After three years at Ashland High he returned to Cape Cod to finish out his 36 years of teaching at Barnstable High School. He was a math teacher and coached golf at Barnstable High for 18 years. He was inducted into Barnstable High Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. A major highlight was winning the Mass State Golf Championship in 1972. Bob continued to enjoy golf in his retirement with a great group of friends. Always an avid reader, Irish culture and literature remained his favorite. For many years he was a Town of Barnstable summer police officer, assigned to the police boat. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, nine proud children, seventeen grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Leigh-Anne Manning Horne. His children are Gail Manning, Jean McNamara, Mary Ellen Manning, Eileen McQuillan (Darby), Carol Champagne, Patricia Ahearn (Hugh), Robert Emmett, Jr. Gerard T. and M. Conroy (Paige). Visiting hours will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, February 21st at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road, MARSTONS MILLS. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South St., Hyannis. Burial will follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
