1955 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
CASANOVA, Ruben 58, died at Mount Auburn Hospital after fighting a long illness on August 17, 2014. Mr. Casanova was born on September 26, 1955 in the Bronx, New York, to Ruben Casanova and Maria Antonia (Cruz). Ruben received his B.S. in Urban Landscape Architecture from City College of New York in 1979. He practiced architecture in the New York City area, becoming Director of Garage and Field Facilities for the New York City Department of Sanitation in 1991. He moved with his family to Massachusetts in 1994 and worked for several years at the Harvard Business School as the Director of Construction and Facilities Management. In 2004 he became a stay-at-home Dad. Mr. Casanova studied TaeKwon-Do as a young man, received his Black Belt at the age of 17, eventually becoming a Master and achieving an 8th degree black belt. In 1981 he was the U.S. Champion in TaeKwon-Do and represented the USA that year at the international championship held in Chaco, Argentina. In 1985 he was a member and coach of the U.S. TaeKwon-Do Team for the international championship held in Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Casanova also taught Hapkido, coached Second Soccer in Belmont and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. He was a friend of First Church Unitarian Universalist of Belmont. A talented dancer, he was a fixture at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Belmont, and was also an avid gardener. Mr. Casanova was a devoted son, husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Diane E. Lopez, Deputy General Counsel at Harvard University; their children, Arturo Lopez-Casanova and Ayla Lopez-Casanova both of Belmont, MA; his mother, Maria A. Cruz and grandmother Marianna Lopez both of the Bronx, New York; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.A gathering for family and friends will be held Wednesday, August 20 4pm to 7pm in the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, BELMONT 02478.
