SONIA TARNOPOL LANDES Obituary
LANDES, Sonia Tarnopol 88, died on April 12, 2013. She was the beloved wife of 69 years of David Landes, mother of Jane Landes Foster, Richard Allen Landes, and Alison Landes Fiekowsky, grandmother of 8 and great-grandmother of 9. Sonia and David met when they were 14 and 15 years old and were inseparable forever after. Professionally, Sonia was an exceptional teacher: in her early days teaching the Carden Reading Method to first graders, then English to seniors at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols, then training the lower school teachers at BB&N, and writing and publishing a series called BOOKWISE guides for teachers to use to teach quality literature in the elementary grades. She taught her children and grandchildren and those of her great grandchildren who were lucky enough to be born in time to read and to love to read. She is the author with her daughter, Alison, and in the last edition, her granddaughter, Rebecca, of Pariswalks. She was adored for her warmth and generosity and her true interest in others. She was the best wife, mother and grandmother imaginable. She was at the center of an immense circle of friends around the world. She was a mentor and "mother" to innumerable friends and relatives. She cannot be replaced and our loss is immeasurable. Her children and husband are sitting shiva in Philadelphia at the Fosters from Sunday, April 14, to Monday, at 293 Brookway, Merion, and on Tuesday at at the Fiekowskys, at 438 Ballytore, Wynnewood, from Wednesday to Shabbat at David and Sonia's apartment at the Quadrangle, 3300 Darby Road, Haverford. Her son Richard, will sit shiva in Boston at 8 Priscilla Road in Brighton, from Thursday until Shabbat. Donations can be made in her name to the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement. Arr. by Bringhurst Funeral Home at West Laurel Hill Cemetery. www.forever-care.com
