STEPHEN E. HERRING Sr. Obituary
HERRING, Stephen E., Sr. 77, of Bridgewater died peacefully on April 25 while surrounded by his family. Stephen was the loving son of the late Stephen and Nina Herring and was a graduate of Newton High School Class of 1955, where he played varsity baseball and helped lead his team to the State Baseball Championship. After school he enlisted in the US Marines and served in Okinawa as a demolition's man during the Cold War. Upon his return Stephen worked for the Newton Police Department before transferring to the MDC Police. During the Vietnam War and Forced Busing, Stephen served the Police Force honorably, protecting citizens and maintaining public order. Stephen earned his college degree in Law enforcement from Anna Maria College. After serving the Force for 25 years, he retired as a State Trooper in 1991. He loved the game of golf and spent much of his retirement on the links. Stephen was named golfer of the year in Golfer's Digest. He had the foresight to build his home on a golf course: the Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater. He was a past member of Marlboro Country Club and the Wayland Inner Circle and was happiest when he was with his family and grandchildren. He was a world traveler and loved spending time with his family near the water. He was a member of the Baker's Beach Association and summered in Westport, MA. Throughout his life, Stephen was insulin dependent. He fought and overcame juvenile diabetes, living his life to its fullest. Stephen was the loving husband of Colleen Price-Herring of Bridgewater and was the father of Stephen E. Herring Jr. (USA ret) and his wife Janell of VA, Jeffrey Price Rys and his wife Linda of CA, and Andrew Price Rys and his wife Justina of Taunton. Loving "Papa" of Katie, Carmen, Danny, Matthew, Frederick, and Andrew. Brother of Annabelle and Robert Mrozinski of MI and Ruthie Herring of Newton and loving Uncle of Ruthanne, Bobby, Stephen, Sally, and the late John. Funeral from the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St., BRIDGEWATER, on Fri. May 3rd at 10:00am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Basil's Chapel, 122 Park Ave., Bridgewater at 11:00am. Burial will be on Sat., May 4th at 11:00am at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St, Newton, please meet at main gate at 10:45am. Visitation will be held on Thurs. evening from 5-8 at the funeral home.
