DR.  STEVEN PHILLIPS IRVING Obituary
IRVING, Dr. Steven Phillips A resident of High Point, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on December 11, 1948 in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Harold Norbert Irving and Herminie Phillips Irving. Steve, as he was known to his family and friends, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with honors, from Northeastern University in Boston in 1971, and a DMD degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston in1975, receiving The Gold Medal Award. This was given to the student who had attained the highest academic standing in his class. During his years at Harvard he was invited to join Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honor Society. He completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, and at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, where he served as Chief Resident. Steve also earned a Medical Degree and completed internships in Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. In 1980 he joined the faculty of the Department of Dentistry at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, NC, as Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He also had appointments in the Departments of Otolaryngology and Plastic Surgery at Bowman Gray. In 1984 Steve entered the private practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Medical Center, in High Point, NC, where he practiced with Dr. William Hinson. At a later date, he founded Drs. Irving, DeSalvo and Russell, where he was in practice until November, 2013. Steve was a member of Rotary Club of High Point. He was a Master Mason, belonging to the Numa F. Reid Lodge in High Point. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and was a Shriner, as well. Steve enjoyed photography and loved to read. He enjoyed the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team and the Boston Red Sox. Steve was an avid skier until his health began to decline. He even owned and drove a race car at Bowman Gray Stadium in his earlier years. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Steve was preceded in death by several cats, most recently, Sir Boris Whyte-Black. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Katz Irving, son, Jeffrey Irving and his wife, Kat Lamp of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, his sister, Valerie Irving of Randolph, and cats Waldo Astoria, Purrrkins, and Miss Price Ann Purrington. Private funeral services were held at Schlossberg & Solomon Memorial Chapel in CANTON on Sunday, May 4th. Donations in his memory may be made to Kate B.
