DAYTON, Truman Shelton Of Winchester, known to many friends as Dates, passed away on Sunday February 3. He was the beloved husband of Edna, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Truman was born on April 4, 1925 and raised in Watertown Connecticut. Youngest in his class, he graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in aeronautical engineering at the age of 20. He served briefly at the end of WWII on the USS Mississippi and again in the Korean War on the USS Tolovana. Truman worked for the American Appraisal Company for 42 years before retiring in 1990 as Vice President and head of the New England sales office. He served as a deacon and on numerous committees at the First Congregational Church in Winchester. He worked on the Winton Club stage crew for over 20 years, and served for over a decade on the board of directors at The Mount Vernon House. He enjoyed tennis, badminton, skiing and spending time with family and friends at Bear Island on Lake Winnipesaukee. In addition to his wife Edna, Truman is survived by his daughter Judith Dayton Mitchell and her husband Peter of Brookline, son Jonathan, and his wife Nancy of Harvard, and grandchildren Kimberly and Matthew Dayton, along with many nieces and nephews. His sister Thelma Sauter predeceased him. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. at The First Congregational Church, Church Street, Winchester, MA. In lieu of flowers, the Dayton family requests that donations be considered in Truman's name to: Winchester Hospital Dept. of Oncology/Hematology Research, Winchester Hospital Foundation, 611 Main Street, Winchester, MA 01890.
