WILLIAM JOHN JACKSON Obituary
JACKSON, William John "Bill" Died peacefully on August 22nd at his home in Carleton- Willard Village, Bedford, MA. Bill was born in Pittsburgh in 1925. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University where he lettered in Football and Track. While at Harvard he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps V-5 program during WWII. After graduating from Harvard he taught history, coached, and held administrative positions at The Belmont Hill School, Phillips Exeter Academy and The Lawrenceville School. At Lawrenceville he was the Chairman of the History department, and received the Masters Award for outstanding teaching. Bill earned his MA and ED.D degree from Columbia University in American History, and earned the NIH Fellowship to study at St Andrews in Scotland, and Princeton University. He wrote a history of New Jerseys role in the Civil War, New Jerseyans in the Civil War. The book was published in 2000 by Rutgers University Press. He leaves his wife of 59 years Nina Davis Jackson; three children: Bo of Atlanta GA and his wife Lauren; David of Dedham MA and his wife Molly; Kate of Lexington MA and her husband Peter Kent, and eight grandchildren Sam, Emily, Pete, Parker, Charlie, Ben, Will, and Charlie. A memorial service will be held at Carleton-Willard Village, 100 Old Billerica Rd., Bedford, on October 19th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Public Broadcasting System (www.pbs.org).
