Ann Kelley Obituary

Madison, WI, an internationally acclaimed neuroscientist, died August 5th at her home in Madison, WI of metastatic colon cancer. She was 53. Native to Milton, MA, Dr. Kelley attended the Winsor School in Boston and the University of Pennsylvania before earning a PhD in Experimental Psychology at Cambridge University in England. After research and teaching positions at the University of Bordeaux, Harvard, and Northeastern University, she joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. In 2006 she was named Wisconsin Distinguished Neuroscience Professor. The focus of her research was the brain mechanisms involved in drug addiction and obesity. Editor of several professional journals, she authored over 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers and managed federal research grants for more than twenty years. Her numerous professional honors included a Nobel lecture in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work received attention in the popular press, including segments on the BBC and the CBS Evening News. A Memorial Service was held in Madison on August 12th. Ann is survived by her children, Patrick Stinus of Pittsfield, MA, and Emily and Eric Levin of Madison; her parents, Francis and Elizabeth Kelley of Chapel Hill, NC and Green Harbor, MA; her sister, Mary K. Sullivan of Worcester, MA; her brother, John L. Kelley of Norristown, PA, her partner, Mark Newton Lowry, and 8 nieces and nephews. A brother, Joseph C. Kelley predeceased her. Memorials in Ann's memory can be made to the Ann E. Kelley Fellowship in Behavioral Neuroscience, to support training of future generations of Behavioral Neuroscientists, University of Wisconsin Foundation, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53726 or to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, Ann E.
