ROBERT REYNOLDS Obituary

Reynolds, Dr. Robert (Bob) Nelson Of Milford, NH, formerly of Needham, MA, died peacefully on May 11, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born on February 26, 1922 in Troy, NY, the son of Roland Edward Reynolds and Winifred Nelson Reynolds. Bob is a graduate of Albany Academy, Yale University, and Albany Medical College. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Reynolds served in the Navy as LTJG, medical officer, on ships in the Mediterranean. Following military service he was employed at Boston's New England Medical Center (Boston Floating Hospital) where he went on to become their first Pediatric Anesthesiologist. He also served as Professor of Anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine, retiring in 1987 after a distinguished 35 year career. In recognition of Bob's commitment to the care of children, Tufts established The Robert N. Reynolds Award in Pediatric Anesthesia, which is presented annually to the graduating resident who most exemplifies the standard of excellence established by Dr. Reynolds. An active retiree, Bob began a second career as a volunteer at Harvard's Arnold Arboretum and the New England Wildflower Society's Garden in the Woods where he led walks, taught workshops, and collected data for the professional staff. He and his wife Nancy travelled extensively, during which time Bob completed the Milford Track in New Zealand twice. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Miller Reynolds of Milford, NH, children Douglas N. Reynolds of Cedar City, UT, Jeffrey W. Reynolds of East Aurora, NY, and Cynthia A. Reynolds (Hauptman) of Pepperell, MA; 4 grandchildren, and his beloved cat, Smudgie. Bob was best known for his deep intelligence, unwavering integrity, love of horticulture and travel, and his kind and gracious manner. A private service is planned in Upton, MA at the end of summer. In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to the New England Wildflower Society.

Thank you Dr. Reynolds for being Instrumental in jump starting my career as your Anesthesia Technician at the Boston Floating OR from 1971-1975. I then went on to Nursing School and in the early to mid 80s became the Distributor for a start up Orthopedic Implant Company in New York that became a leader in the Industry. I just retired at 65 and if it wasn't for his recommendations for Nursing School my life may have taken a different path. He was a wonderful, intelligent formidable man and Doctor and he will be sorely missed. My condolences go out to his entire extended family. Thank you Dr. Reynolds.

Thank you, Dr. Reynolds, for teaching me how to take care of children safely. I will always remember the sparkle in your eyes. To his family - I am so sorry for your loss. He was a kind man and wonderful teacher. Respectfully, Carolyn Holland, CRNA, MSN - still working in Frisco, Colorado as a CRNA.

The "real deal" before "real deals" were invented. I learned so much from him, not only anesthesia, but how to live with integrity.I have so many stories, but will only relate one. After being his resident, I became a faculty and wound up with the locker next to him. As we were changing our clothes at the end of a day, I asked "Dr. Reynolds what do you think about..... He turned to me and said "We are both standing here in our underwear, I am Bob". I still called him "Dr. Reynolds for those so many years.

I am so sad. Dr Reynolds (I still can't call him Bob) was a giant in pediatric anesthesia. He was brilliant, innovative, and funny, and he inspired me to follow him into that field. I have so much to thank him for, and I will sincerely miss my teacher, mentor and friend.
