SMALL Fred Wm. Small, Jr. May 7, 2013. Born June 24, 1921, Evansville, Indiana to Fred W. Small and Margaret Williams Small. Graduated Salem, IL, High School, 1939. Attended Southwestern College, Memphis, TN from 1939-1941. Transferred to University of Illinois and graduated in 1943, with a degree in Liberal Arts. Upon graduation entered military service with United States Navy. After commissioned Ensign, USNR reported to San Diego, CA, and served on active duty in Pacific Theater, World War II, until was discharged in May 1946. Married Alice Temple February 7, 1948. She survives along with three children, Sarah Small Cummings (Mark Cummings), Margaret Small Ronna (John Ronna), and Fred W. Small, III (Ellyn Evans Small); Grandchildren: Sam Brelsfoard (Stephanie Hayes), Alex Brelsfoard (Tabitha Ralphs), Emily Ronna, Elliott Ronna, Haley Small, and Victoria Small. Great-grandsons Lucan Brelsfoard and Orryn Brelsfoard. Sister, Martha Small Deason. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Upon completion of service in World War II and Korean Conflict, Captain Small entered and graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and pursued a career in pharmacy until retirement in 1995. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity and honor society Rho Chi. As a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (Decatur, IL) he was an ordained Elder for three terms. He and his wife became active members of Payson Park Church when they moved to Boston. He was a member of USNR Division 9-41 for over half a century and served as its President in 1964-1965. Some of Small’s passions were model railroading, golf, traveling, and following sporting teams at the University of Illinois and the Chicago Cubs and Bears. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, May 18, at 10:30 A.M. at Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont. In lieu of flowers contributions would be appreciated to any of the following organizations: Save the Children, Animal Rescue League of Boston, or Perkins School for the Blind.
