Nicholas Nebelski

1947-2013 HALIFAX Nicholas A. "Nick" Nebelski, 65 of LaRock Lane, died Saturday morning, June 22, 2013 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness.

Nick was born in Brattleboro on September 23, 1947 the son of Joseph and Marie (LaValley) Nebelski. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro and was a graduate of Brattleboro Union High School. He later attended Marlboro College eventually transferring to Unity College, Unity, Maine where he earned his B.A. in Social Science.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Army he served two and one half tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged from active duty at the rank of Staff Sargeant with a service connected disability on December 7, 1973. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal, five times awarded the Army Commendation Metal with valor and the Vietnamese Cross Gallantry with Palm and Star awarded by Premier Tu of South Vietnam.

He had been employed for General Dynamics in Groton, CT and had worked for several general contractors in the greater Brattleboro area including Zaluzney Construction based in Vernon. With the skills he acquired he built his own home from frame to finish, something he was very proud of.

Nick was a member of the American Legion Brattleboro Post #5 V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 of Brattleboro and the D.A.V. John Blake Chapter 15, in Bellows Falls. He was also an active volunteer with the Halifax Vol. Fire Department up until the loss of his legs from complications of diabetes.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, puttering around his home and quality time shared with his family.

On August 29, 1986 in Brattleboro he was married to Dawn Akeley who survives.

Besides his faithful and devoted wife of almost 27 years he leaves two sons, Terry Nebelski of Colchester, CT and Joel Nebelski of Halifax, three daughters, Amanda Aguilar of N.M., Nikki Macie of Brattleboro and Kassia Nebelski of TX, two sisters, Patricia Shepheard of CT and Jean Mahoney of Brattleboro.

Other survivors include 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and many cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Joe Nebelski, and Russell Mears, and a sister, Christine Rudolph.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside committal services will be conducted Tuesday, July 2'Nd at 11:00 A.M. in Niles Cemetery in Halifax. Full military honors will be accorded at graveside.
