Robert "Bob" Howe
VERNON Robert "Bob" Howe, 66, of Vernon, passed away on the morning of Aug. 12, 2013, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in White River Junction.Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Chris; daughters, Lolly Akley and wife, Holly, of Dummerston; Melissa Lynch and husband, Barry, of Chester; Lynn Akley of Vernon; one sister, Deborah Walker of Claremont, N.H.; two brothers, Stanley Howe and wife, Tina, of Dummerston and Carroll Howe and wife, Connie, of Vernon, and many nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply.
He was a loving grandfather "Papa" of four grandchildren, one of whom Bob and his wife raised, Latisha Akley of Vernon, Christy Akley of Brattleboro, Skylar Howe of Chester, and Brie Lynch also of Chester.
He was predeceased by a son, Mitchell R. Howe, and by his parents, Stanley and Evelyn Howe.
Bob was educated in the Vernon Elementary and BUHS #6 schools.
Bob was a veteran of the Army and fought in the Vietnam War. Bob served with Delta company, First Battalion - 14th Infantry (Golden Dragons), 4th Infantry Division. His headquarters were at Camp Enari, Pleiku, Vietnam. Bob fought in the Chu- pa mountains, Ia Drang valley, Plei Me and Cambodia. His company survived a tiger attack in Plei Me on Aug. 11, 1969, and his company got overrun Nov. 5 and 6, 1969, by the 33rd NVA regiment.
Bob was company RTO, taking over directing mortars and keeping his company organized. He recorded a tape of the attack which shows his courage as a great infantry soldier. Bob served as the RTO as well a Tunnel Rat. Bob came home from Vietnam in 1970 and never stopped fighting that war. Robert Allen Howe was truly an American War Hero.
Bob was a dedicated employee for the Vernon Elementary School, as a custodian for over 30 years. He loved every child who came through the school and had very close and friendly relationships with all the teachers. He was a God-fearing man who would pray without ceasing for each child, their parents, every teacher, principal and co-worker. He loved them all unconditionally.
He was also an independent trucking hauling cross country for several years prior.
Bob was a man of great faith and attended church every Sunday. He would always put others before himself. He was a humble man who, very often, went without so others could have what they needed. Bob was full of compassion, wisdom and loving kindness that will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Bob was a fun person who loved to laugh and lived life to the fullest. He never felt more at home than being in the woods. He truly was a great man.

I have been blessed to know Bob and to have been able to call him friend, cousin, and brother in Christ, Bob has been a man of steadfast faith and testimony for the grace and love of God's gift of salvation though Jesus, a gift available to all that would receive it, and Bob had received that free gift with open arms and heart, I have no doubt where Bob will be spending eternity, My prayers and deepest sympathy go out to all of Bob's family for the void now left in their lives by his absence. A. Lyle Howe Jr.

I am so very sad without you. I don't want the night to come, yet it comes. I don't want to go to bed without you, yet I have to. I cry all the time, never ceasing. I don't want to go forward in life without you, yet I have too. I am so sad, my heart is breaking, my world is crumbling and I am spiraling down and cannot stop, at times I think, I don't want to stop myself just let me go. I am so lonely without you honey. I am sick to my stomach, my head pounds and my chest is so heavy with a heart that feels so broken. I just don't know what to do. My faith in Christ Jesus is strong, it truly is, yet as I look in every corner of my world right now and I cannot even find that. I am so profoundly sad.

Bob truly was an American hero. I am so sorry to hear that he's gone. He was generous about sharing his war story with me nearly 20 years ago for the book I was writing about psychological trauma. I have often thought of him with admiration and gratitude. Peace be with you, Bob.
