Maria C. M. Manzano, 87, passed away into the arms of our Lord and Father, Jesus Christ our Savior, and with the presence of the Holy Spirit on Dec. 24, 2012 at her home in Brownsville, Texas.
She was born in Brownsville, Texas to Juan Diego Muñoz and Paula Gonzalez on Feb. 18, 1925.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Mariano Manzano; sister, Socorro Silguero; brother, Mariano Muñoz; sisters-in-law, Hilda Saldivar Muñoz, Estella Ramos Muñoz, Rosalia Muñoz; Emma Muñoz and Rafaela M. Alvear; brothers-in-law, Lupe Silguero and Thedore Manzano, and nephew, Michael Muñoz.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Manzano of Brownsville; three sons, Mariano (Yvonne) Manzano Jr. of Edinburg, Daniel Onofre Manzano of Austin and Teo Manzano of Austin; a stepdaughter, Lorraine Castro of Brownsville; grandsons, Mariano Manzano III and Adam Manzano; great-granddaughter, Meadow; her brothers, Juan Diego Muñoz Jr., Onofre Muñoz and Leandro (Gloria) Muñoz of San Antonio; in-laws, Edward (Millie) Manzano, Gabrielle (Rosie) Manzano, (Jerry) Julie Lusk, and numerous nephews and nieces.
As a child she attended school at the Immaculate Concepcion in downtown Brownsville with her sister Socorro.
She graduated from Brownsville High School in 1942, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pan American College in Edinburg, Texas in 1962, and attained her Master of Education from Texas A&I University in 1982.
She was a devoted elementary school teacher for 28 years with the BISD, having taught at Lincoln Park, J.T. Canales, Ebony Heights and Robert Martin elementary schools.
She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She loved to spend time with family and friends, enjoyed the holidays at her Mother's home, and reglarly attended the annual celebration of the Fourth of July on South Padre Island. She enjoyed attending football games, either the Texas Longhorns in Austin or the countless Friday nights at Sam's Stadium cheering for the Brownsville high schools. She always treasured the companionship of her puppies, Mae, Chula and especially Spotty, and the blessed arrival of her cat Tiger.
The family would like to express a special gratitude to her primary caregiver, Leticia Contreras, for the love and comfort provided in making our Mother's final days happy and peaceful and to Juanita Torres for her loving presence and visitations.
Our appreciation to the medical care provided by Dr. Jaime Silva, including Patty and all the nursing staff, and to Dr. Florina A. Duazo and her dedicated staff.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 1914 Barnard Road with interment to follow at Buena Vista Burial Park Mausoleum.
