BUCYRUS: Longtime Bucyrus Attorney Edward R. Wead, 73, of rural Sycamore, passed away Wednesday evening at home following a short illness. Ed was born January 30, 1940 in Sistersville, W. Virginia to the late Kenneth and Mary (Murphy) Wead. He was married August 31, 1983 to Kathleen "Kate" Bils who survives along with children Brian (Hope) Wead of Rocky Mount, N. Carolina; Amy Bernard of Brunswick, GA; step children Jason (Alison) Hillyer of Galena and Tate Hillyer of Galion; grandchildren Hayden, Megan, Madison, Caitlin, Christian, Colin, and Alex; great grandchild Connor; step grandchildren, Jackson, Anderson, and Jameson; brother Fred (Patty) Wead of Florida; sister Barbara (David) Wetnight of California; and loyal secretary and friend Marsha Hamm of Bucyrus.

Ed grew up and went to school in Springfield where he graduated from Springfield Central Catholic High School in 1958, he served as class president. He continued his education at Bowling Green State Univ. on a football scholarship where he graduated with a Science and Business Administration degree in 1963. Ed was enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1963 during Vietnam and received a purple heart. Following his military service Ed returned to the Univ. of Toledo where he graduated with a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1966. .

Ed originally joined the law firm of Kennedy, Kennedy and Purdy, which later became Kennedy, Kennedy, Purdy, and Wead in 1966. Following a short period as assistant prosecutor with Kirby Roberts, Ed began his private practice in 1977. For 37 years Ed practiced law from his offices across from the Crawford County Court House where he shared space for many years with Atty. Michael Kennedy. Ed served as a Magistrate in the Court of Domestic Relations in the late 1970's and as an acting Judge for Cr. Co. Municipal Court in the mid 1980's. For many years he served as a Court appointed Attorney for Capital Cases. What Ed enjoyed most was being a trial lawyer and was well known throughout the State. He was a member of the Crawford County Bar Assoc., the Ohio Bar Association, the Ohio Trial Lawyers Assoc., and formerly a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court, St. of Ohio.

Ed raised cattle for several years on his small farm and was an accomplished builder and carpenter. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying with Bob Hancock as well as going to the lake fishing on his boat. Ed was a member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge and served on the Cr. Co. D.D. Board (Fairway-Waycraft) as well as the board of Council on Aging.

Friends may call at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home on Sunday where the family will receive friends from 1-5 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Rev. Michael Corwin officiating, burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
