BUCYRUS: Gerald Dale Straley passed away Monday, November 11, 2013, at 8:15 PM in Blanchard Valley Hospital. He had resided in Findlay, Ohio for the past year and a half.

He was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, on February 15, 1921, to the late Ben & Freda (Wallace) Straley.

He married Jo Ann Waples August 16, 1952. He was previously married to Patricia Strauss. Both preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters, Teresa (Randy) Lambert of Findlay, Ohio, and Teri (Duane) Shoemaker of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren, Scott Lambert of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kate (Jon) Hayfield of Findlay, Amy (Josh) Summerhays of Lincoln, California and Megan Monahan of Woodland Park, Colorado; great grandchildren, Mia, Lucy and Gwen Summerhays and Madaline Monahan. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren from his previous marriage; brother, Jay(Karen) Straley, Plain City, Ohio.

In addition to JoAnn, his wife of 50 years, he was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond, Benjamin and Harold Straley; daughter, Yvonne Gee; and an infant son.

Mr. Straley served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a fighter pilot.

He graduated from The Ohio State University in physical education and social studies, teaching and coaching for over 35 years. In 1979 he retired from Bucyrus City Schools, where for the last 22 years of his career he taught physical education and American history and coached football, basketball, and track.

He and his wife JoAnn retired to south Texas, where he continued to be active. He volunteered as a track coach and volunteered at a food pantry. Hobbies in retirement included bowling, pool, Euchre, and his first love, golf, which he took up at age 64. Two golfing achievements he prided himself in were shooting a hole-in-one and besting his former students at their class reunions.

In 2011 he was inducted into the Crawford County Sports Hall of Fame, an honor which gave him great personal pride and satisfaction.
