James William Grandy

ORANGE PARK, FL: James William "Jim" Grandy, 78, died March 31, 2013 under the care of Hospice at the Moosehaven Retirement Center.

He was born December 22, 1934, in Hocking, Ohio and had lived at Moosehaven since July 26, 2011. He was preceded in death by his beloved wives Marjorie (40 years) and Betty Ann (14 years).

He is survived by a daughter Tamara Lynn of Frazeyburg; and two sons, John William (Renee) of Lexington, and Thomas David (Penny) of Ashland; he is survived by three step-children: Angela Dixon, Richard Davis, and Maria Birchfield; he is also survived by three step-brothers: James Rodney Hoffer of Haines City, FL; Terry Lee Hoffer and David Allen Hoffer both of Sandusky, OH; he has four grandchildren: Carl Massey, Heather Massey, Jade Marie Grandy and Mitchell Vaughn Grandy; he has three step-grandchildren: Rickie Davis, Karla Birchfield and Joseph Birchfield; and two great-granddaughters: Faith and Dixie Massey; and a great-grandson: Xavier James Sawyer.

He was preceded in his death by his parents Thomas Frederick Grandy and Gladys Helen Sherwood Grandy Hoffer.

He was a graduate of Newark (Ohio) High School (1952), and Ohio University (BA 1961, MA 1968). Jim was a member of the Guerrant Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Kentucky.

A retired teacher, coach, and friend to many of his students, Jim had spent his career at Margaretta High School, Castalia, OH; Bucyrus (OH) High School; Lees College, Jackson, KY; and adjunct professor of English at Central Ohio Technical College, Mt. Vernon Campus.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Galion Lodge 303, achieving the fraternity's highest award, the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. He was also a member of the Loudonville Post of the American Legion and a life member of the Mount Vernon VFW Post 4027, having served and attained the rank of Specialist 5th Class in the United States Army in North Carolina and in Heidelberg, Germany (USAEUR Hqs G-3) for nearly five years.

A memorial service has been planned for Friday, April 19th at the Moosehaven Chapel in Orange Park Florida at 2:00 PM.
