William R. Long

MANSFIELD: William R. Long, 93, formerly of Mansfield and Bucyrus, died Oct. 9 at Brethren Care Village in Ashland after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 11, 1919 in Lorain to Will Rausch Long and Ruby Vivian (Heimann) Long.

He graduated from Lorain High School, and was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving aboard a destroyer escort, the U.S.S. Williams. Bill was proud of his service, and for many years he organized reunions with his shipmates, with whom he enjoyed a lifelong bond.

He was also a member of the Mansfield Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars; and of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

After serving in the war, he moved to Mansfield to work for his friend, Harold Holland, at Holland's Meat Market. He later worked for the Page Dairy for many years before it closed; then as a maintenance worker for Madison Local Schools, where he retired in 1982.

He is survived by his son-in-law, James H. Hunt of Mansfield; grandson and wife, Gary and Kristin Hunt of Delaware; granddaughter and husband Susan and Michael Householder of Ashland; and great-grandsons Sean, Andrew, Kevin and Justin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (Gow) Long, whom he married Aug. 5, 1940 in Covington, Ky.; three brothers, Richard, Rodger and Ned Long; and his daughter, Shirley Hunt.

Calling hours will be Sunday 1-4 p.m. and one hour before funeral services, which will be held TUESDAY at 10:30 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors with the Rev. Michael Namy officiating. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
