O'BRIEN - O'BRIEN - Donald E. November 11, 2013, at age 83, beloved husband of Anne S. (nee O'Neill) O'Brien; dearest father of Tim (Anna), Dave (Pam) and Sheila (Lee) O'Brien; loving grandfather of Patrick, Grace, James, Peter, Riley and Charles; devoted son of the late James and Ruperta O'Brien; dear brother of the late William and James O'Brien. He is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. Mr. O'Brien was a graduate of SUNY at Brockport and earned his Masters Degree from Penn State University. A proud member of the U.S.A.F. and represented the European Command in the world basketball championship. He began his coaching career at Harpur College, where he started the soccer program and also coached cross country and golf. He was a long time tenured professor at Buffalo State College. He became the assistant basketball and soccer coach in 1963 and the head basketball coach in 1972, winning the SUNYAC championship and competed in 2 NCAA college division tournaments. While head coach of golf 1972-1988 the team placed 4th in the 1987 championship. He was also instrumental in the development of the womens basketball program. Throughout his long career in teaching, coaching, and life, he had a positive and lasting impact on many lives. The things that mattered most to Don were family, friends, golf, fishing, and the 19th hole. The family will be present on Friday from 4-8 PM at the (Harris Hill Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8440 Main Street (near Harris Hill Road). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church (Main St. at Harris Hill Rd.). Friends invited. Flowers gratefully declined.
