MAHAR - Irene R. Age 92, a WW-II veteran, former Chairman of the Department of Public Health Nursing at SUNY-Buffalo and a pioneer in bringing Hospice to WNY, died in Venice, FL on April 9, 2012. A native of Poultney, VT, she earned a BS Degree in Public Health Nursing from the SUNY-Buffalo and a Master's in Public Health from Harvard University. Irene served in WWII as an Army Air Corps Nurse. She taught Public Health Nursing for many years at Buffalo. She worked closely with Dr. Donald and Charlotte Shedd in the early years of the development of Hospice. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be buried in Poultney at a July Graveside Service. Throughout her life, Irene gave generously to the John R. and Katherine Mahar Memorial Scholarship at Green Mountain College, Poultney, VT 05764. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Irene's memory to that scholarship.
