ALLEN C. HILLIKER - GRAND ISLE - Al was born June 26, 1940, in St. Albans, and ascended to fire fighters heaven on Feb. 18, 2014. Al graduated from B.F.A., St. Albans in 1958 and then joined the U.S. Navy to "see the world" on board a fleet tanker with the responsibility for emergency operations at sea. After returning from Navy duty, he worked for the St. Albans Fire Department, the Vermont Air National Guard as part of their crash crew and then IBM in Essex Junction. In his 30+ years at IBM, he worked in Safety, Security and Emergency Control and made many friends with his contagious smile and laugh. Al was very involved with community activities and is a lifetime member of the Essex Junction Fire Department, plus served on the Essex Town Fire Department, Essex Rescue, Bolton Valley Ski Patrol, Grand Isle Rescue and South Hero Fire Department. While President of Grand Isle Rescue, he helped coordinate the building of their new rescue station in the 1990's. Al was currently serving as the Assistant Fire Chief of the South Hero Fire Department, where he spent many happy days working on the fire trucks, equipment and buildings. He was also a current member of the Board of Directors of the North Country International Fire School in Alburgh, Vt. Al always felt it was important to train the next generation of fire fighters to help protect their communities. Al always enjoyed fishing and hunting and spent many happy hours fishing on Lake Champlain and in the Florida Keys. He also enjoyed woodworking, antiquing and in the last couple of years RV'ing with the Lake Champlain WIT club. He also enjoyed meeting new friends and new people while selling antiques with his wife at local antique shows. Al leaves his wife, Samera, after 28 wonderful years of marriage; his brother, Brian, and sister-in-law, Patricia, of Thaxton, Va.; and brother-in-law, Kevin Campbell of St. Albans. He also leaves a dear aunt, Enid Blatchley, of St. Albans; wonderful nieces, Tammy, Karen and Kim, plus their families in Virginia; as well as several cousins in Vermont. He was predeceased by his parents, Luther and Laura Hilliker of St. Albans; plus several aunts and uncles. Al lived life to the fullest and always managed to stay busy every day. There will be no visiting hours and burial will be held later this spring. Assisting the Hilliker family is Rett Heald of the Heald Funeral Home, where messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com.
