CAROL TABER HAYES - BURLINGTON - Carol Taber Hayes, 91, passed away in the Converse Home on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012. Born on Dec. 26, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of John and Helen Taber. A lifelong learner and gifted teacher, she graduated from Oberlin College and received her master's degree from Radcliffe College of Harvard University. Later in life she also received two further graduate degrees from Middlebury College. One of the great joys of her life was her love and affinity for literature, and her summers at the Breadloaf School of English in Ripton were among her most cherished. She taught English at the University of Vermont in the 1950s, after moving to Burlington from Massachusetts. She then became Chair of the English Department at Champlain College, followed by a return to Massachusetts and a 30 year career in the English Department of Holyoke Community College. She taught full time until the age of 78. Five years ago she moved to Vermont to reside near her daughter. She is survived by her three beloved daughters, Elizabeth Burr and husband, John Landgraf, of Minneapolis, Minn., Becky Cassidy and husband, Richard, of South Burlington, and Katherine Thompson of Denver, Colo.; and her treasured sister, Genevieve Dabback of Ft. Myers, Fla. She was predeceased by her much beloved brother, Dr. David Taber, and is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jean D. Taber. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the loving caregivers at the Converse Home for their kindness during the final years of Carol's life. Rebecca Hodgeman and Connie Rafoul also made her life easier and gentler with their wonderful care. In her final days, Carol received expert and amazing hospice care from Dina Child of the VNA.
