DONALD R. WRIGHT - ST. ALBANS - Donald R. Wright, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away Thursday evening, May 9, 2013, following a brief illness, in the Franklin County Rehab with his loving family at his side. Born on Feb. 4, 1922, in St. Albans, he was the son of the late, Norman W. and Hazel (Foley) Wright. Don was 91 years old. On June 16, 1951, in St. Albans, he married Mary Wood, who survives him. Don was a 1941 graduate of Bellows Free Academy, and attended Vermont Junior College. He then started working for the former Central Vermont Railway, until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he then started his career with the former Missisquoi Pulp Mill, retiring as the Customer Service Manager. He was a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the First Congregational Church, St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E., the Marine Corps League, Franklin Lodge #4, F.&A.M., and served on the Board of Directors of the St. Albans Cemetery Association. He also was a former member of the Champlain Country Club and the Owl Club. He enjoyed playing golf, fly fishing, playing pool, playing bridge at the Owl Club, deer and partridge hunting, and very rarely missed a B.F.A home hockey or girls softball game. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary of St. Albans; their daughter, Elizabeth Ross and husband, Richard, of Essex Junction, and their children, Mary Ellen, Dorothy, and Michael and his friend, Jessica Jensen; nieces and nephews, Alan Wright and wife, Veronica, of Highgate, Jack Wood and wife, Pamela, of Plainville, Mass., Jenny Doran of Massachusetts, Judy Bancroft of Barre, Sharon Thayer of Burlington, and Scott Burnap and wife, Barbara, of Ohio. Don is also survived by his close friends, Charlie Reed and Robert St. Pierre; his friends at his exercise group, the Franklin County Senior Center, and his Quintin Court neighbors. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his son, Norman W. Wright on Nov. 13, 1990; brother, Lawrence and his wife, Caroline; and sister, Phyllis. Don's family would like to thank the staff at Fletcher Allen Shepardson 4, and the Franklin County Rehab for the care and support that he and his family received during his brief illness. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 27 Church St., St. Albans. A funeral service will then be held at the church at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Judy Steger Kennedy officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
