EDGAR J. MATTESON JR. - SHELBURNE - Edgar J. Matteson Jr., 69, a native of North Bennington, died peacefully, after a battle with cancer, on Friday, May 10, 2013, at his home in Shelburne, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Bennington on June 6, 1943, and was the son of the late Edgar and Katherine (Muntz) Matteson Sr. During his high school years, "Eddie" was a sports prodigy, excelling in basketball and baseball, and was awarded a scholarship to Dartmouth College. In 1966, after an injury that halted his sports career, he transferred to the University of Vermont where he graduated with a B.A. in Psychology. Edgar moved to New York City and began a career in the media industry working for Nielson Ratings and NBC as an Advertising Executive. After nearly a decade there, he returned to Vermont and continued with advertising and sales, a career that took him west to Laguna Beach, Calif., for a period of two years. He moved back to Vermont and worked with local area newspapers until retiring in 2007. Edgar possessed an unparalleled wit, was adept as a chef, passionate about food and drink, and his charm flowed effortlessly. A self proclaimed, "Flaming Liberal Democrat" and avid Yankees fan, he was never shy about his opinions and always generous with others' points of view. A confident and benevolent man, he gave strength, humanity and courage to our family. Edgar was a Mason, a Shriner, as well as a proud member of both The Lions and Rotary Clubs. Edgar Matteson is survived by his wife, Leah M. Matteson; sister, Marian F. Matteson; brother, Gary Matteson and wife, Jane Davis; son, Jonathan Cristaldi and his wife, Amanda Wells; sons, Steven and Patrick Cristaldi; son, Cristopher Matteson and his wife, Ellen; three grandchildren; three nieces and two nephews; and his beloved pets, Smoky and Sadie. Graveside committal services will be held on June 1, 2013, at 12 noon at Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington. Guestbook condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net.
