IVAN PELS BURLINGTON - Ivan Pels, 85, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on March 27, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Health Care, following a short illness. He was born in New York City on June 16, 1927, the eldest son of the late Walter and Estella (Danziger) Pels. He grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y., and graduated from New Rochelle High School and New York University. In 1956, he married his beloved wife, Rose Kropsky. They soon moved to Vermont and raised their three children, Mary Ann, David and Rob, in Burlington. Ivan retired in 1998, after a 30-year career at the Vermont Department of Health where he managed the Immunization Program. During his tenure, Vermont's childhood immunization rate rose to the highest in the nation. He was presented with an award for his service to the state by Gov. Howard Dean, who himself was among the many physicians and public health nurses who had befriended Ivan during his long career. Ivan was an extraordinarily friendly and giving man who touched the heart of everyone he met. He was very well-read and a great conversationalist. He was a talented craftsman, artist and writer. Ivan had a quick and wry sense of humor, which he displayed even in his final days. Ivan cherished his family and his many, many friends. We are all immensely blessed to have known him. He is survived by his wife, Rose; son, David of Watkins Glen, N.Y.; son, Rob and his wife, Ingrid, of Burlington; son-in-law, Art Levy of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Nate Levy, Liz Levy and Molly Pels; very special cousins, Barbara Eckman of Lachmount, N.Y., and Alice Richardson of San Mateo, Calif.; sister-inlaw, Anne Rosenberg and her husband, Lorry, of Livingston, N.J.; brotherin-law, Benjamin Kropsky and his wife, Yolanda, of Teaneck, N.J.; sister-inlaw, Gloria Deitcher Kropsky of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Ann; brother, Edward; and brother-in-law, Michael Kropsky. A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 31, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Ohavi Zedek Synogogue, 188 N. Prospect St., Burlington. The family will observe shiva on Wednesday and Thursday, April 3 and 4, 2013, at Ivan and Rose's home from 7 to 9 p.m. Arrangements are by Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Directors.
