JAMES J. BREEN JR. - BURLINGTON - James J. Breen Jr., of Lakewood Estates, passed away on April 2, 2014, with several family members at his side. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1928, he moved with his parents to Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950. Jim met and married his beloved wife of 58 years, Peggy (nee Keane) in 1955. In 1964, Jim's employer, National Cash Register (NCR), transferred him to Vermont, supposedly for just one year. Both Jim and Peggy fell in love with Vermont. In 1974, when NCR asked Jim to transfer again, he left the company and founded Breen Systems Management (BSM). Funding for this new venture came primarily from local investors including L.E. Mazel, W.L. Wright, M. Daitchman, C.D. Cairns, R.E. Boardman, R.A. Pecor, Charles Hill, Robert Barry, and Norman Plouffe. Jim often mentioned these men with gratitude for their confidence in him. Jim was a lifelong golfer and 50-year member of the Burlington Country Club, serving as President in 1984 and 1985. Jim was also an active member of Burlington's chapter of Rotary International, serving as President several times. He served on the board of the local chapter of the American Lung Association and co-chaired the Chittenden County Cancer Crusade. He also served as Committee Chair for Chittenden County United Way and as an Associate Board member of Mary Fletcher Hospital. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy; and their six children, Joe and partner, Jackie McBride, of Bristow, Va., Michael and wife, Maureen, of Burlington, Chris and wife, Amy, of Colchester, Kevin and wife, Janet, of Burlington, Mari (Palace) and husband, Josh, of Burlington, and Cathy and husband, Jay Geller, of Falmouth, Maine. In addition, Jim leaves behind his sister and her husband, Barbara and John Marsh of Essex Junction; 12 grandchildren, Jamie, Josh, Keely, Hannah, Molly, Grady, Emma, Jack, Connor, Tyler, Aaron, and Riley; and one great-granddaughter, Tatum. Jim's family gives special thanks to Joseph Haddock, MD, for his expert and compassionate care for the last years of Jim's life. A funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Pearl Street, Burlington, on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 10 a.m. Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
