JOHN E. BERTSCH - SOUTH HERO - John E. Bertsch, 60, of South Hero, passed suddenly in Burlington. John was born in Dayton, Ohio, on July 17, 1952, to Joseph F. and Margaret K. (Voigt) Bertsch. He graduated from West Bloomfield High School in 1970 and continued his education at the University of Detroit, where he received his BS in Electrical Engineering, Summa Cum Laude. There he met and married his wife of 36 years, Tania (Fernandez). He continued his education at the University of Michigan where he received his Ph.D. John was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu Engineering Honor Societies. He settled in Vermont with his family where he was employed by IBM and later GE Health Care. His greatest joy was the time he spent with his family enjoying summers on the lake, and winters skiing at Smuggler's Notch. He also enjoyed Michigan football, photography and playing his acoustic guitar as a member of the Vermont Guitar Ensemble. His family describes John as "Generous of heart and kind in spirit. He leaves these attributes as his legacy to the many lives he's touched". He is survived by his wife, Tania (Fernandez); children, Brian and Rachel; mother, Margaret (Voigt); brother, Charles; and sister, Frances. In John's passing, he leaves an extended family whose lives had been enriched by his love, optimism and companionship: father- and mother-in-law, Mario and Yolanda Fernandez; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Mario and Debbie (Ramsey) Fernandez, Ralph Mitchell and Ivette Fernandez, Steve and Lizette (Fernandez) Smith; nephews and nieces, Laura, Jaclyn, Scott, Mario, Teresa, Christopher, Sarah, Michael, Clare, Aaron, Kyle and Max; devoted pet, Bailey. John was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; and his sister-inlaw, Patricia. The family wishes to thank the South Hero Rescue, Dr. Harrington and FAHC ER staff, Drs. Pat King and Mark Levine for the care and kindness they gave John. Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service, Burlington.
