MAURA KATHLEEN "MOMO" FINN - BURLINGTON - Maura K. (Malone) Finn, 53, of Burlington, died peacefully surrounded by a large circle of family and friends on Oct. 6, 2012, in her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her three children, Michael, Erin and Kelly Malone; and her granddaughter, Mikiya Malone. Her sheer enthusiasm and adventurous spirit will be truly missed. Maura was born in Michigan and raised in Stamford, Conn., where she attended Saint Cecilia's grade school and Stamford Catholic High. In 1977, Maura moved to Vermont to attend Saint Michael's College as the first female to receive a full athletic scholarship. As a student, she played basketball and studied elementary education. She proudly served as the first female fire fighter at Saint Michael's Fire and Rescue. Maura graduated in 1981 and accepted a job at the Burlington YMCA as a preschool teacher and aquatic director. A lifelong learner, she continued her education and received a degree in nursing from the University of Vermont in 1992. In 2011, she completed two masters in nursing and health administration. As a nurse at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Maura was able to do what she loved, help others. In her many years she worked in all areas of the hospital from Maternity Nursing to Case Management and everything in-between, with her favorite position being the first lactation consultant at Fletcher Allen. In addition to helping others, she loved skinny dipping, horseback riding and socializing with old and new friends. A lifelong athlete, she was always ready to watch, play, coach or cheer just about any sport. Most recently, she brought her leadership skills to City Market's board, on which she was a director since 2010. She will be remembered for her infectious smile, selfless strength, unbridled enthusiasm and larger-than-life personality. Maura loved to travel from New Zealand to Ireland, Montana to Maine and everywhere in-between. She seized every opportunity that came her way, without hesitation, whether it was an invite to dinner or an early morning jump in the ocean, Maura was the quintessential alpha female, always good to go. Services will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel at St. Michael's College in Colchester. For more information call LaVigne's Funeral Home at (802) 655-3480. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Maura's memory may be made to a place that was very special to her heart, The Eagles Nest Foundation, 43 Hart Road, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768, www.enf.org/.
