RICHARD S. BARRETT SHELBURNE - Richard S. Barrett, 93, of Shelburne, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. He was born in New York, N.Y., on Aug. 7, 1920, the son of the late William and Sarah O'Connor Barrett. Richard is a World War II veteran, having served with the US Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He was proud of his service and an active member of the US Marine Corps League for many years. He was married to Kathleen Cooke on Dec. 9, 1944, in Jamaica, N.Y. Richard is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Shelburne; their daughter, Barbara Kling and husband, Gary, of Essex Junction; four grand- children, Michael and Stephen Kling, and Christopher and Emily Barrett; and daughter-inlaw, Paula Barrett of West Hempstead, N.Y. He was predeceased by two sons, Richard and James Barrett; and two brothers, William and Clifford Barrett. Richard worked as a conductor on the Long Island Rail Road for 38 years. He and Kathleen retired to Florida, where they lived for 23 years before moving to Shelburne in 2010. Richard was a devoted husband and a wonderful father and grandfather. With his quiet, gentle demeanor he was loved by all and will be missed by everyone who knew him. The family wishes to thank the medical and nursing staff on McClure 5 and Shepardson 4 at Fletcher Allen Health Care, in particular Lauren Bailey, Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, for their care of Richard during his final illness. We also thank the staff at the Shores at Shelburne Bay for their care, support and friendship over the past three years. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. Visiting hours will also be on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be held later this spring at the convenience of the family.
