SISTER STELLA ALBERTINE DEMERS - WINOOSKI - Sister Stella A. Demers, 98, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Our Lady of Providence Residence in Winooski at 11:45 a.m. Sister Stella was born and baptized the same day, April 8, 1915, in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of the late Narcisse and Marie Louise Demers. Sister Stella was raised in a family of eight siblings. In 1931, as a young woman, Stella received a diploma in Commercial Studies from St. Anthony School in Manchester, N.H. However, the interest she had in pursuing religious life and the desire to follow one of her older sisters who preceded her remained strong. Stella entered the Sisters of Providence in Montreal, Quebec, on July 16, 1934, and pronounced her religious vows in 1936. For five years thereafter, she worked as an elementary school teacher at St. Joseph's Orphanage in Burlington. She was then asked to assume responsibilities for accounting and bookkeeping at St. Ann's Home for the Aged in Jersey City, N.J. For the following 25 years, Sister Demers served in several accounting offices after receiving her degree in administration. Her responsibilities during these years were varied and extensive: local superior, chronicles, purchase, bishop's apartment, and teaching. She was also always available to the poor who presented themselves and their needs to her with confidence. Sister Stella is survived by her nieces, Stella Ouelette of Bedford, N.H., Sister Francoise Demers, CSC, of Manchester, N.H., and Diane Demers of Portland, Ore.; nephew, the Rev. Roger Demers of San Antonio, Texas; and very close friends, M. Laurie Hanley and Sister Mary Bridget Tierney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Providence Residence Chapel, 47 West Spring St., Winooski, with the Rev. Roland Rivard presiding. Interment will follow in the Sister of Providence plot at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Providence Residence Chapel. The Vigil Service will follow at 7 p.m. The LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 132 Main St. in Winooski is in care of arrangements.
