WALTER SMORGANS - INDIAN LAKE, N.Y. - Walter Smorgans, 93, formerly of LaVergne Road, Indian Lake, N.Y., died Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, 2014, at The Lodge at Shelburne Bay, Shelburne, Vt. Born on Sept. 10, 1920, in South River, N.J., he was the son of Stephen and Helen (Maletz) Smorgonetz. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II as a Radar Operator on a B-24 with the 55th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron. Their mission included solo flights over Japan to observe weather conditions for Army Air operations. He participated in the Air Offensive in Japan and earned the Air Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He maintained interests in aviation and weather observation throughout his life. Until his retirement in 1982, Walter was employed as an Industrial Electrician at Hercules Powder Company, Parlin, N.J. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Helen M. Smorgans, in 2011. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Smorgans Marshall and husband, Roger Marshall, of Burlington, Vt.; and one son, Walter M. Smorgans and wife, Cindy, of Cambridge, Vt. The family wishes to express special thanks to Liddy, Karen, Kenda and Julie, his caregivers in Indian Lake, N.Y., and to the wonderful staff in the Haven in Shelburne, Vt. In accordance with Walter's wishes, there are no calling hours or funeral services scheduled. Entombment will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, N.Y.
