Benjamin Frederick Obituary

Lieutenant Benjamin Kirk Frederick M.D.

Lieutenant Benjamin Kirk Frederick, M.D. passed away on Saturday morning, December 17, from injuries sustained in an accident while on active duty stationed in Iwakuni, Japan.

Ben was a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy with the Silver Eagles VMFA 115 Marine F-18 squadron. With an adventurous soul and a drive to serve others, he found a perfect fit in a career as a Naval Flight Surgeon. He was a caring and devoted brother, son, and doctor.

An avid traveler with an eye for adventure, Ben steered his schooling and career to take him all over the globe. Born in Freeport, Illinois on November 20, 1983, he was a wonderfully independent and carefree spirit from the start. From a childhood full of friends and family in Vermont and college at the University of San Diego and Florence Italy, to obtaining his medical doctorate from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, clinical public health work in Haiti and beyond, to earning his wings and proudly serving as a Flight Surgeon in the U.S. Navy, Ben lived a full life. Though a carefree, fun-loving, and lively force, he was fiercely devoted in service to his squadron and in loyalty to his friends and family.

He is survived by his brother, Lieutenant Christopher S. Frederick, M.D., who is stationed with the Navy in Portsmouth, Virginia, and by his parents, Mark T and Marilyn R (Lassandro) Frederick, of Underhill, Vermont. He was predeceased by his grandparents: Dr. Vincent L & Lois F (Moakley) Frederick, Frank R & Lillian R (Oddo) Lassandro, his cousin Anthony Lassandro and his surrogate brother Ben (Benjo) Haller.

Ben was my first tenant to rent the Apartment my Grandmother lived in after her passing. I was so impressed with him I knew he was who should be there and it was comforting. His brother Chris stayed also. That was some years ago. Both struck me as exceptional men, and that reflects highly on family. My prayers have been for them and will always keep Ben in my thoughts.

Dear Marilyn,

Brec and I are so saddened to hear this news of your son, Ben and cannot even begin to imagine your pain. How very proud you must be of him, he sounds like a wonderful young man who did so much in his life so tragically shortened. We remember how, through you, he and his brother kindly donated their toy kitchen set so that our Adam could have one, and how that really doesn't seem that long ago. Please know our hearts are with you at this very tragic time. May Ben rest in peace, and we thank him for his service.
