Douglas W. Merkner, 39, of Lyndora died Friday afternoon at the Grove City Medical Center.
He was born in Butler, Sept. 9, 1972, a son of Edward Merkner and Barbara Hollack Merkner Silhanek.
A 1991 graduate of Butler High School, he graduated from Penn State University in 1995, earning a degree in horticulture.
Doug was a customer service representative and supervisor of the customer service center for Armstrong Utilities, where he had been employed for the past six years.
He was a member of the St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church in Butler, and a devout Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins fan. He enjoyed working on his yard and loved spending time with his family and spoiling his two beloved Chihuahuas, Bailey and Kali.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Holly Bishop Merkner, who he married May 10, 2003; his mother and step-father, Barbara and Leonard Silhanek of Lyndora; his father, Edward Merkner of Dayton, Ohio; his brother, Eric Merkner of Wellington, Colo,; stepsisters, Melissa (David) McDonald of Dayton, Ohio, and Michelle (Scott) Thistlewaite of New Hope, Pa.; an aunt, Janet Hollack in Green Valley, Ariz.; one nephew, Justin Sapar; stepnieces and stepnephew, Matthew, Meaghen and Sophia McDonald of Dayton, Ohio, and Carolyn, Kathryn, Madelyn and Emmersyn Thistlewaite, all of New Hope.
Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Jason Merkner, on Feb. 10, 1999; his grandparents, William and Anne Hollack; and uncles, William Hollack Jr. and Gary Lee Hollack.
MERKNER - Friends of Douglas W. Merkner, who died Friday, July 27, 2012, will be received at Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Cindy Byers, a hospice spiritual counselor, officiating. Cremation services will follow.
