Edward Andrew Gallagher, 87, of Slippery Rock was received into the arms of his heavenly father, ending the earthly pain Tuesday at Orchard Manor, Grove City.
He was born Feb. 4, 1926, to John J. Gallagher and Anna Margaret Williams Gallagher. He married Sara Irene Shockey on Feb. 5, 1948, and they just celebrated 65 years of marriage.
He was employed for 20 years by the City of Butler as a mechanic, then by Lava Crucible, Zelienople, as a machinist until his retirement in 1980.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and served on the Destroyer USS Ringgold DD 500 in the South Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, both in Slippery Rock.
In his younger days, he drove stock cars and he loved to tinker fixing anything mechanical. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a member of the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Slippery Rock and was a former member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Butler.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Irene Gallagher of Slippery Rock; three daughters, Helen Daubenspeck of Greer S.C., Sara I. (Robert) Birckbichler of Volant, Pa., and Ann Marie (Mike) Coggins of Spartanburg, S.C.; three sons, Thomas (Donna) Gallagher of Piedmont, S.C., Clarence (Debbie) Gallagher of Greenville, S.C., Bob P. (Lisa) Gallagher of Branchton, Pa.; a sister, Patty (John) Swidzinski of Butler; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and his faithful dog, Pookie.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Agnes Marie Gallagher; a son, James E. Gallagher; a grandson, Robert E. Daubenspeck Jr.; two sisters, Pauline Brookhart, and Elizabeth "Betty" Conerty; and three brothers, Bernard, Walter and Robert.
GALLAGHER - The family of Edward Andrew Gallagher, who passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.
A funeral Mass will be observed at the St. Peter Catholic Church, 670 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, at 10 a.m. Monday with Father Kevin Poecking.
Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Peters Catholic Church Building Fund, 670 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
