George G. "Chesty" John, 78, of Chicora died at 3 a.m. Thursday at VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler following a short illness.
Born on April 14, 1935, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Anthony Bismark and Mamie Zaiden John.
He spent most of his young adult life living in Rattigan, Pa., with his grandfather, Joseph John, and his grandmother, Agnes John.
Chesty was a graduate of Karns City High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served on the island of Okinawa during the late 1950s.
He worked for 27 years at Pullman Standard, until its closing in 1982, then worked at Castle Rubber for eight years. He was also a Donegal Township supervisor, a truck driver and school bus driver over the course of his work life.
He was a member of the Mater Delorosa Church in Chicora.
He enjoyed mowing the fields on his farm, playing cards, listening to classical music, singing and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Jordan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Graham, who he married on July 2, 1960. They were inseparable for the past 53 years. Also surviving are his sons, David John and his wife, Sally, of Hanover, Md., and Jarrod John and his wife, Kimberly, of Chicora; his granddaughter, Jordan A. John of Chicora; his aunt, Hinid Zaiden of Pittsburgh; his seven siblings, sisters Agnes, Mary Lou and Irene, and his brothers, Anthony, Eugene, Mark and Gregory.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin sisters, Joyce and Jean.
JOHN - A celebration of life with a Mass of Christian burial for George G. "Chesty" John, who died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mater Dolorosa Church, 409 N. Main St., Chicora, with the Rev. Joseph Pudichery, Pastor, officiating. At the request of "Chesty," guests and family will meet at the church.
The burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Sugar Creek.
Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Chicora VFW and the Chicora and the Bradys Bend American Legions.
The funeral arrangements are being coordinated by the Steighner Funeral Home in downtown, Chicora.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to VNA Inpatient Hospice, 154 Hindman Road, Butler, PA 16001.
